I developed my first blog in 1998 and started promoting it around the same time. During my initial years, I used to promote my blog through phone calls, email footer, direct emails etc. The first search engine I worked with was Yahoo and I paid US$ 35 to get listed in yahoo Directory since that was the best option to get my personal blog included in the Yahoo search results.

Over a period of time, many search engines evolved including Google. 2 decades later, Google has the absolute leading position among all search engines in UAE region. If you ask me which is the most popular search engine in Dubai, I can say without any doubts - it is Google.

However, since the question is about the popular search engines other than Google, let me try to answer it.

Popular Search Engines in the UAE and their market share

  1. Google: Unsurprisingly, Google remains the dominant search engine in the UAE, holding a substantial market share. With its advanced algorithms and local content focus, it provides users with relevant results tailored to their needs. According to recent statistics, Google commands over 90% of the search engine market in the UAE. StatCounter Global Stats reflects this dominance clearly.

  2. Bing: Microsoft’s Bing is another player in the UAE, even though with a smaller share. It appeals to users who prefer its integration with Windows and Microsoft products. While its market share varies around 3-5%, it’s worth noting that Bing Ads can be a cost-effective alternative for businesses looking to reach specific demographics. StatCounter provides insights into its market share in Dubai.

  3. Yahoo: Although its popularity has waned globally, Yahoo still retains a small user base in the UAE. It often attracts users who are loyal to its email services and news portal. Its market share is typically around 0.5-1%, and it functions primarily as a portal rather than a primary search engine.

  4. DuckDuckGo: With growing awareness of privacy issues, DuckDuckGo has gained traction among users in thre UAE who prioritize anonymity in their online searches. While it doesn’t have a significant market share in UAE (less than 0.5%) compared to Google or Bing, its user base is steadily increasing, especially among those who are concerned about data privacy. DuckDuckGo’s traffic stats show an upward trend.

  5. Local and Niche Search Engines: There are also local search engines and platforms that cater specifically to the UAE market, such as YallaBanana and Souq.com (now part of Amazon). These platforms may not be traditional search engines, but they serve niche markets effectively.

Conclusion - Popular Search Engines in the UAE

Below is the list of popular search engines in the UAE with their market share:

1. Google - 95%

2. Bing - 3.5%

3. Yahoo - 0.5%

4. DuckDuckGo - 0.3%

5. Yandex - 0.3%

6. Petal Search - 0.05%

In conclusion, while Google dominates the search landscape in the UAE, other search engines like Bing, Yahoo, and DuckDuckGo have their places in the market. Understanding the unique characteristics and user bases of these platforms is essential for any SEO strategy aimed at effectively reaching audiences in the UAE.
